Can You Buy Your Own Modem for Comcast Internet?

Internet service provided through Comcast includes the use of a modem that is provided by the installers. For the duration of your use of Comcast Internet, you are charged a monthly rental fee for the use of its modem. Instead of using the modem provided by the company, some people may want to purchase one of their own to use with Comcast Internet.
Purchase Your Own
Comcast would prefer that you use the modem they provide because they make money by charging you a monthly rental fee. However, many broadband modems you can buy yourself at an electronics store will work with the service. As long as you pay for the Internet connection, you can use your own modem. Let the company know that you are using a modem you purchased yourself. Someone will pick up the modem provided by the company and you will no longer be charged the rental fee.
Compatibility
If you choose to purchase your own modem, it is important to ensure that it is one that will work with Comcast. Contact the company or speak with an employee at your local electronics store to inquire about which modems are compatible. If you wish to maintain a higher speed of service, you will have to spend a little more on your modem. However, in many cases, the price of the modem is recovered within a year based on the lack of rental fees.
Choices
One of the benefits of purchasing your own modem rather than using the one provided to you by Comcast is the ability to choose your modem. Different modems offer varying speeds. The modem Comcast gives you may not be the most up-to-date modem available on the market, thereby decreasing your broadband speeds. However, if you are able to go out to the store and choose your own, you can purchase the fastest available modem that is compatible with Comcast service. You are in control of which modem you receive.
